Chemistry teaching in basic education faces challenges in sparking student interest due to the complexity of the concepts and calculations involved. Problem-Based Learning (PBL) places students at the center of the educational process, using real-world problems to promote investigation, teamwork, and critical thinking, thus leading to meaningful learning. This work was carried out with first-year high school students from a state school in Rio de Janeiro, analyzing the water quality of the Jacarepaguá lagoon, the same neighborhood where the school and a large part of the students are located. Physicochemical and microbiological parameters were investigated to assess water quality according to CONAMA Resolution 357/2005. This research details the activities involved, which include music and video, group discussions, and practical experiments carried out in the school laboratory with the students. The results of the sample analyses revealed a degradation of the lagoon, with Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels above recommended standards, indicating a possible pollutant load originating from domestic and industrial effluents.
