Resumo

This review material addresses studies involving photosensitizing molecules, highlighting commonly applied methodologies or the evaluation of their photophysical and photobiological properties, as well as the relationship between photodynamic activity and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The topic is relevant and current, especially considering the growing application of these molecules in areas such as photodynamic therapy, photocatalysis, and biotechnology. The objective is to propose a critical discussion on the lack of standardization in methodologies used in the characterization of photosensitizers. Considered an interdisciplinary area, methodological discrepancies are observed among different research groups. The text highlights an important gap in the literature and consistently justifies the need for approaches more closely aligned with the principles of molecular spectroscopy. This approach gives the work a methodological and didactic character, with a potential positive impact on the reproducibility and reliability of experimental results reported in the field.
