This article highlights the importance of chemistry in understanding the beach environment, focusing on the substances present, their interactions with solar radiation, and the resulting effects. The main objective is to deepen knowledge about the chemical components and processes occurring at the beach, including the composition and function of sunscreens, as well as strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of solar exposure. Additionally, it addresses the environmental concerns related to sunscreen ingredients, particularly organic UV filters, which may bioaccumulate and adversely affect marine ecosystems such as coral reefs. The study anticipates concluding that while sunscreens are essential for human skin protection against ultraviolet rays, there is a pressing need to develop and use formulations that are safe for both human health and the environment, thereby harmonizing effective protection with sustainability. The article also emphasizes the vital role of chemistry education and environmental awareness in preserving coastal ecosystems.
