Resumo

This article continues the Here is Chemistry publication series and focuses on the chemical composition and bioactive properties of major plant-based infusions, with particular emphasis on Camellia sinensis (traditional tea), chamomile, mint, and yerba mate. A clear technical distinction is highlighted between tea, which is prepared exclusively from the leaves of C. sinensis, and infusions derived from aromatic or medicinal plants, which are commonly but inaccurately grouped under the general term “tea” in popular usage. The compositional analysis of these beverages reveals a wide diversity of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, tannins, terpenes, alkaloids, and polyphenols, which are responsible for both their sensory characteristics and functional properties. These compounds contribute to antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, and stimulant effects. In addition, the article discusses the role of these molecules in health promotion, sensory perception, and the cultural significance of plant infusions, as well as the expansion of the global infusion market. This growth reflects increasing consumer interest in natural products and perceived health benefits, reinforcing the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with scientific validation in the development of safe and effective herbal medicines.
