Resumo

One of the most significant applications of quantum mechanics, with a profound impact on chemistry,
is to describe in detail the mechanisms of chemical reactions and catalytic processes that occur in the
condensed phase. In this brief review, important concepts in the modeling of liquid-phase chemical
reactions are discussed, along with a tutorial on the performance of functionals and models that include
solvent effects. Emphasis is placed on continuous solvation models such as PCM, SMD, and COSMORS, which are among the most widely used today for modeling chemical reactions.
Keywords: Potential of mean force; solvation free energy; transition state theory; solvent effects; density
functional theory calculations.
