Resumo

Fireworks have enchanted people around the world for hundreds of years, being a striking presence in
celebrations of different cultures since the invention of gunpowder. The sound and vibrant colors that
explode in the sky make for true visual spectacles, considered by many to be ephemeral works of art.
However, most people who enjoy these pyrotechnic performances are unaware of the chemical principles
that make this spectacle possible. In addition to beauty, there are also concerns about the safety, health
effects, and environmental issues associated with the use of these artifacts, leading to initiatives that
produce friendlier artifacts. Is it possible to celebrate with beauty and emotion, but also with awareness
and responsibility? This article from the series “Here we have chemistry” proposes a reflection on the
chemical, social and environmental aspects related to the use of fireworks.
