Some studies indicate that aluminum (Al) is a toxic element to the human body, and that prolonged exposure to high levels of Al may be associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Cosmetic eyeshadows are among the most widely used personal care products. The use of low-cost eyeshadow palettes may pose long-term health risks to consumers due to their high concentrations of potentially toxic elements. Since these products are applied to the eye area, they may present particular risks to human health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify and quantify aluminum in low-cost eyeshadows of different brands and colors, manufactured in China and sold in Uberaba, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The presence of Al may result from its intentional inclusion or from raw materials used in production, such as natural minerals. Qualitative analytical techniques and a quantitative spectrophotometric method were employed. Aluminum was detected in all tested samples, with concentrations ranging from 11458 to 238795 mg kg–1. This work contributes to the development of analytical methodologies for detecting and quantifying aluminum in personal care products, emphasizing the need for monitoring substances used in items that are part of everyday life.
