Resumo

Motivated by the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSB) 2022-2023,
the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ) launched the “Post 2022 Chemistry Movement – Sustainability and
Sovereignty”. One of the activities of this Movement was the creation of the Qui+S Program, designed to
promote sustainability in Brazil through chemistry. Part of the scope of the Qui+S program was to define
the main challenges in chemistry that can impact sustainability in Brazil until 2050. Based on interviews
with more than 70 professionals from industries, universities, government and other organizations in
11 states of Brazil and considering educational, economic and social/environmental criteria, 5 main
challenges for chemistry and sustainability were defined: (1) Chemistry for climate change, (2) Chemistry
for waste transformation, (3) Chemistry for sustainable water use, (4) Chemistry for development of
sustainable materials and (5) Chemistry for sustainable food production. Each of these challenges were
divided into 3 priority front actions. This work describes the process to define these 5 main challenges
and the priority front actions.
