Resumo

Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) waste, a material widely used in the footwear industry, was used as a
support medium in an anaerobic filter for the treatment of Swine Wastewater (ARS), with the objective
of evaluating its efficiency in comparison to gravel. The experimental bench consisted of 2 anaerobic
polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filters, one filled with EVA and the other with Nº4 gravel. The wastewater
collected at the farm in the swine sector of UESB was analysed before and after 34 days of treatment,
with a hydraulic retention time (TDH) of 24 hours to evaluate the efficiency of the support media through
the parameters: pH, chemical oxygen demand, total solids, volatile solids, phosphorus and turbidity. It
was verified that the anaerobic filter filled with EVA presents itself as a promising option in the treatment
of swine effluents, presenting average removals of 63.77% of chemical oxygen demand, 51.31% of total
solids, 56.97% of volatile solids, 46.29% phosphorus and 88.33% turbidity.
