Resumo

The textile industry generates a large volume of effluents that are often discarded into the environment
without proper treatment. These effluents are made up of organic molecules that alter the properties of the
water, making it unfit for consumption. To treat these effluents, hydrated niobium oxide (HNb) was modified
with molecules of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane
(APTMS) and used as an adsorbent for the anionic dye red remazol RB. The modified solids were
characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, zeta potential
measurements, CHN elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis.
The characterization results indicated that the modifications occurred. Adsorption tests were carried out
varying pH, adsorbent mass, reaction time and dye concentration. The solid HNbCTAB reached equilibrium
in 240 minutes and the solid HNbAPTMS adsorbed 96% of the dye in 5 minutes. In equilibrium studies,
saturation occurred at 450 mg L-1 for both adsorbents.
