A Contribuição da Química no Enfrentamento da Pandemia de COVID-19 no Brasil

Given the global spread speed of the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, it became necessary to research
and develop vaccines, medications, detection devices, and even adaptations and new teaching strategies.
In this review, we sought to highlight the contribution of chemistry in assisting in the fight against and
containment of the COVID-19 pandemic through published studies. To do so, articles were researched in
the Scopus and Web of Science databases, using “Chemistry” and “COVID-19” as keywords, and filtering
by field and country, Chemistry and Brazil, respectively. The selected works were then categorized and
presented in topics to facilitate understanding. It was observed that Chemistry played a fundamental role
in technological and therapeutic innovations for addressing the pandemic, significantly contributing to
syntheses, characterizations, conceptual understanding, material applications, physicochemical analyses,
and application of analytical techniques, among many other aspects. Furthermore, several works were
developed to inform, discuss, or clarify chemistry education contents aimed at combating misinformation
and debunking possible erroneous correlations disseminated among the population.
