This work is a bibliographic review of the Digital Image Based (DIB) from fundamental research to
chemistry teaching, with an emphasis on analytical chemistry regarding qualitative and quantitative
approaches and for chemistry teaching. Therefore, an exploratory and descriptive study on the state‑of‑art
was carried out. The principles to obtain a digital image, electronic devices used, chambers, sample
platform, precision, accuracy, color models, data treatment, and apps available are discussed. The
applications of digital images to medical, geology, physics, pharmaceutical, biochemical, food science,
forensic science, environmental, teaching and other applications are discussed. Moreover, chemistry
teaching is enriched when digital images are employed, which can increase the motivation and enthusiasm
of students, making classes more attractive and ensuring better learning. Since there is a growing number
of publications in the field of “digital imaging”, it is essential to state that it is an area with enormous
potential and much to offer for research and teaching.
