Resumo

Pathogenic bacteria resistance is a huge concern for global public health because several infectious
diseases, such as tuberculosis and pneumonia, before easily treatable, became dangerous due to the
lack of effective and safe drugs to fight them. Thus, searching for new substances with activity against
resistant bacteria is necessary, which may become future drug candidates to combat these infections. In
this context, stands out the carvacrol, a phenolic monoterpene produced by several aromatic plants, with
important antimicrobial properties reported in the literature. Furthermore, several carvacrol derivatives
were obtained by semisynthesis to optimize their physical properties and biological activities. Therefore,
the present study aims to gather and discuss pieces of evidence of antibacterial activity exhibited by
carvacrol and its derivatives.
