Resumo

In the last two decades (1990-2010), several countries have undergone important and significant changes in universities. In Brazil, due to the implementation of government program, there was expansion of universities resulting in greater access for students to graduate. The increasing number of students in universities, lacking in basic knowledge that should have been acquired in high school, especially in the chemical disciplines, physics, mathematics and biology, has influenced to increased dropout and retention of students. Thus, the Mentoring Program in Organic Chemistry discipline for the Course of Agricultural Sciences, aimed to: demonstrate that this program has helped to reduce dropout and retention of students and broaden the knowledge of students in organic chemistry. In addition, the program aimed to highlight the importance of mentoring as a teaching and pedagogical intervention in content and activities for the discipline of "Organic Chemistry", these courses of the Federal University of Sao Joao del Rei - Campus SeteLagoas; and also aimed to increase knowledge in chemistry; identifying some points raised in chemistry in high school; proposing better teaching-learning relationship of this discipline in basic education. The results were promising since its implementation. The evação rate decreased in Organic Chemistry, with the highest rate of approval, promoting a leveling of knowledge of basic education.
