Depression in aged people starts mainly because of two reasons- increased risk of death due to illness and increased risk of cardiac diseases. Mental-health disorders affects their energy, appetite, sleep, hobbies and relationships. Also, when elder people are suffering from depression, they most commonly complain about reduced energy, arthritis pain and severe headaches. The main causes of depression in the elderly can be because of reasons such as health problems, loneliness, loss of identity, lack of purpose, etc.Patients suffering from depression should consult doctors for medication as it can be treated. Doctors also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in order to treat patients. It helps in changing the negative thinking of the patient.Dementia Currently, 50 million people in this world are living with Dementia, and the number is expected to rise to 82 million in 2030 and 152 million in 2050. The dementia syndrome can be progressive in nature - which causes deterioration in the memory, thinking, behaviour and the ability to perform daily chores. This disease is caused due to the combination of cognitive and physiological changes which includes memory loss, confusion, disorientation, personality changes, etc. Dementia can be caused due to different diseases and Alzheimer's is one of them.Alzheimer's Disease Alzheimer's disease starts when the brain cells start getting wasted and ultimately die. As it is the most common cause of dementia, the disorder makes an individual forget conversations and events. A person suffering from Alzheimer's will find a problem in carrying out daily tasks and will undergo serious memory deterioration. The disorder can be treated through medications which will reduce the symptoms and the decline rate but the effect of medicines is always temporary. Elders should enroll for different programs and services which will help them in recovering from the disease and in maximising the function of the brain.
